Working Out on the Road
Whether you travel for business or pleasure, sticking to your exercise plan on the road can be a challenge. Three important components to exercise success are:
- Consistency - maintaining a regular habit of exercise is key to long term success
- Quality - research has shown interval training is essential to lower body composition, and requires less time.
- Adaptability - your ability to be creative and adapt to your surroundings will enable you to exercise anywhere.
Using the above as a guideline, here are some suggestions to get the most out your exercise plan while on the road.
- Check with hotel staff, or go online to find local trails or parks to run or walk.
- Hotel Fitness Center- what is available at your hotel. A bike, treadmill or elliptical trainer is great for intervals, and dumbbells can serve you well for strength work.
- Local health clubs or gyms- ask the staff about local facilities. Many will have pools, large weight rooms and plenty of cardiovascular equipment.
- Work with a trainer to create a plan- a good fitness professional will work with you to create a plan that will help you stay on track with you fitness goals whether you are away on a 2 week vacation, or are a frequent traveler.
With a little forethought and a bit of creativity, you can still be successful in accomplishing your health and fitness goals while making exercise an adventure.
